The Beijing IP Court, officially launched on November 6, 2014, with sole jurisdiction over all IPR-related civil and administrative cases formerly under the jurisdiction of the Beijing Intermediate People’s Courts, has been in active operation for a year. At the press conference marking the first anniversary of the IP Court, President Su Chi remarked that by November 6 thisyear, the IP Court had received a total of 7,918 cases, of which 6,699 were of first instance, 1,204 second instance, and 15 cases of appeal; and the Court had concluded or closed the hearing of 3,250 of these cases, of which 1,200 were civil cases and 2,050 administrative ones. It is reported that the Beijing IP Court now has 45 judges. The first selected 18 principal judges received, on the average, 400 cases, and concluded or closed 159. According to Su’s analysis, the first-instance cases accounted for 85% of all the cases received; the administrative cases 75%; many, 80%, were cases involving overseas interested parties or parties from other regions; and cases involving technical subject matter took up 25%.
